It caused a sudden evacuation of an interior highschool last week and the cancellation of a formal grad ceremony.
Now an 18 year old male student has been charged.
He appeared in Castlegar Provincial Court today after police say he made “serious threats.”
North District RCMP Cpl. Dave Tyreman says safety comes first , so precautions had to be taken.
“Everybody gets to grade twelve; it’s graduation, that’s something that’s very important, but you know the main thing we have to look at is safety of our children.”
Nelson RCMP say in a release “our primary focus was to determine the credibility of the information, identifying anyone that should be spoken with immediately, and determining what further actions should be taken. Investigators have determined this threat to be very serious in nature and have determined this was an isolated incident.”
It goes on to say “we appreciate that there has been a number of rumours and speculation relating to the investigation, but our lack of public confirmation is not reflective of the investigative efforts taken. In coordination with School District #8, support is in place to assist those concerned about the recent events.”
Mt. Sentinel Secondary near Nelson was closed on Friday and remained closed today.
