The BASE jumper killed in Squamish today after his chute failed to deploy has been identified as a 30-year-old man from Seattle.
Gary Kremer’s girlfriend Paige took to Facebook this afternoon to share the heartbreaking news.
“This morning, my love Gary Kremer died in a base jumping accident in Squamish, BC. His kind, loving, energetic, and adventurous spirit will always live on.”
Squamish RCMP say the fatal accident happened after a BASE jumping attempt gone wrong.
Sergeant Jolaine Percival described what witnesses saw after he jumped off the first peak of the Chief.
“The BASE jumper jumped from the first peak of the Chief… His parachute didn’t initially deploy, and when it finally did it was close to when he was approaching the ground.”
Percival says he hit the ground and suffered substantial injuries near a roadway of the Sea-to-Sky highway and later died at the scene.
One North-bound lane was shut down in the Sea-to-Sky highway for several hours as a result of the incident.
The B.C. Coroner’s Service is investigating.
