A Langley mom has the happy ending she’s looking for after her open letter on Facebook in defense of her young son with Down Syndrome went viral.
Jennifer Kiss-Engele penned the note on Thursday, upset her son Sawyer wasn’t invited to his classmate’s birthday because he has Down Syndrome.
In it, she says she’s sorry her son’s classmate’s parent is not informed, maybe scared, or uncertain about what it means to have Down Syndrome, and that as parents, she thinks both of them could have done better.
But the story does have a happy ending.
Since her letter has been shared over three thousand times, she’s happy to let everyone know Sawyer’s classmate created a special birthday invite for him, and he’s been beaming and can’t stop talking about it ever since.
Kiss-Engele adds she’s proud the letter has reached so many people, and says as parents we all need to do a better job of fostering these relationships.
She ends by saying she hopes parents who read this will help open that dialogue with their own child and perhaps make that one ‘extra’ invitation.
