Surrey’s Mayor Linda Hepner says the city will be looking at dog bylaws after the recent pit bull attack.
Hepner took to Facebook asking the public for suggestions for bylaw changes.
“I wanted to get a sense of what the public is actually feeling to the most recent attack.”
Holding owners’ responsible, mandatory professional pit bull training, and banning the breed were among popular responses from the community.
“I do believe that dog owners should be responsible. We’ll look at the ways that we could strengthen out penalties in out bylaws.”
“Quite frankly, and you can see a lot from the comments that people are holding owners responsible for the dogs and to the degree that I certainly believe that to be so as well.”
Hepner is asking the owner of the pit bull to come forward and do the right thing.
She will be raising the matter with the city’s bylaw manager and to council on Monday night.
