The Cleveland Cavaliers have defeated the Golden State Warriors 93-89 to claim the NBA championship.
It’s the first time a Cleveland team has won a championship since 1964, when the Browns won the NFL championship.
The Cavaliers now hold the honour of being the only NBA team to come back from a 3-1 deficit in the final.
Victory didn’t come until the final moments of the close fought game, in which a razor-thin lead see-sawed back and forth all night.
In the end, Steph Curry’s vaunted 3-throw skills didn’t materialize in the crunch, and after Cleveland took a three point lead in the dying seconds, LeBron James put the final nail in the coffin sinking one basket on a pair of free throws.
Golden State wasn’t able to answer before the buzzer.
It’s a crushing defeat for a team being described as a generational phenomenon. Golden state had a dream season losing only nine games, then lost nine in the playoffs including tonight.
