“Sell your stuff. Meet your neighbours. Buy their stuff.”
It started off as a way to take back a nieghbourhood that drivers were using as a traffic cut-through.
Sixteeen years later it’s morphed into a giant community event known as the Great Grandview Garage Sale.
Kate Newstead lives in the neighbourhood and also helps to organize the event.
“Generally speaking, a lot of people hit the street that day and so many people are out in the neighbourhood, it’s a really lovely vibe that comes from this event.”
She says a lot of work goes into it and they rely on the help of volunteers to get the word out. A few years ago they had some lawn signs made up with funding from a community grant.
They also expanded the borders, which now encompass the area from Nanaimo Street east to Clark Drive, and from Wall Street at the south end all the way north to Broadway.
Hundreds of people participate
So far, more than 150 addresses have registered for this year’s sale on the website which has an interactive map that allows people to see where the sales are happening, and what is being sold.
Everything from baby and children’s items, to clothing, furniture, antiques, books, vinyl, collectibles, retro fashions, and tools are listed as being available to pick up at rummage sale prices.
One sale is even offering haircuts and describes their sale as “talented individuals selling things: hair cuts, bread & baked goods, sewn objects, spare items.”
Saturday, June 18 10 am – 2 pm
The sale is rain or shine and as with previous years, Newstead says they expect to see a lot of people roaming through the neighbourhood looking for deals.
