Alberta RCMP are asking for the public’s help now that fire investigators have determined the massive Fort McMurray wildfire was likely caused by a person or persons.
Corporal Hal Turnbull says police want to talk to anyone who was in popular wilderness area called the Horse River Trail System between April 29th and May 5th.
“The reason we would like to talk to individuals who may have been using that area is that it is believed by wildfire investigators that the start of fire MWF-009, essentially the fire which led to the evacuation of Fort McMurray, may have had its ignition in that area.”
Turnbull says with lightning ruled out as igniting the massive wildfire that forced the evacuation of Fort McMurray police are now covering off the bases.
“To ensure that we have covered off all areas while the evidence is still fresh rather than return to the area six months or a year later based on maybe some tips or rumours that something should be looked into. The idea is determine whether or not there was any criminal element involved in the ignition of blaze.”
The flames drove 80,000 people from their homes and destroyed 10-15% of Fort McMurray.
