The Abbotsford School District has decided to no longer distribute the Gideon Bible or other religious materials to students.
Abbotsford was the last public school district in BC that was distributing Gideon Bibles in classrooms.
The District is declining interviews.
Decision came after groups’s request
However, BC Humanist Association spokesperson Ian Bushfield says the decision to no longer hand out religious material came after a request by his group in March.
“Our concern was that in our views public schools shouldn’t be using their resources to promote any one religious world view and instead should be open to discussing all beliefs and not acting as a vessel to proselytize.”
The district required a consent card from parents before a New Testament Bible was given to a student.
Bushfield says his organization believes the distribution of religious materials to be in violation of the School Act.
