A Vancouver Councillor is tabling a motion that would protect a neighborhood of 35 homes in the west end from significant redevelopment.
Adriane Carr is asking council to designate Mole Hill as a conservation Area.
“There are three homes that have been recently purchased with a potential to be redeveloped and the concern of local people is the redevelopment could be of a type that compromises the aesthetic.”
28 of the 30 City-owned properties, adding up to 170 units of social housing, are run by Mole Hill Community Housing Society.
But Carr is hoping preservation could make the site an even more model community.
“People would know it by the heritage homes that have been incredibly restored and the social housing that’s provided there”
Quentin Wright with the society says they’re ecstatic Council will look at the idea.
He says most of the homes were built between 1888 and 1908
“It would signal to the public that the heritage character of the block is highly valued. It would provide a historical context of directing any additional development on this block.”
Council will weigh the idea at next week’s meeting.
