Are officials in New Westminster concerned about traffic pollution?
“We get traffic coming in every direction and that affects people’s health and the health of our community.”
NDP MLA Judy Darcy hopes the installation of a new air quality monitoring station in New Westminster will provide information to show if traffic increases pollution.
“We absolutely need to try and ease off traffic and to even it out across the region. Pollution monitoring will certainly send a very strong and clear message and we will be calling the government to pay attention to it.”
A study between 2009 to 2010 showed that commuter and commercial traffic has a significant influence on air quality in the city.
Darcy adds a regional tolling policy on bridges can alleviate congestion on the Pattullo Bridge.
