Crews have nearly got the measure of a widlfire burning near Highway 3 between Grand Forks and Christina Lake.
Fire Information Officer Ryan Turcot says crews are now mopping up around the edges of the Gilpin Fire, just east of Grand Forks.
“It’s currently 80% contained and at 224 hectares in size. There are currently 42 firefighters on site working to contain that fire, as well as one helicopter.”
Turcot says the fire was spotted on Tuesday, and quickly ballooned from about 20 to 224 hectares.
“It’s fair to say a lot of that growth happened in the first two days, and as of today the fire is 80% contained. Certainly the area has seen cooler weather and we saw some precipitation today as well.
The fire has been visible from the highway, and even forced partial traffic closures earlier in the week while aircraft worked the blaze.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Turcot says while there’s cool weather rolling in across the province, dry conditions mean the fire risk is still very real and people should remain highly cautious.
