The majority of Canadians think we should do more to protect transgender people, according to a new poll.
The Insights West poll found most Canadians are in favour of provisions in Bill C-16, proposed federal legislation that deals with issues related to gender identity and gender expression.
It found 3 in 4 Canadians, or 74%, support making it illegal to discriminate on the basis of gender identity and gender expression.
71% are in favour of updating criminal laws to make it a hate crime when someone is targeted because of their gender identity.
55% think transgender people should be allowed to use the public bathroom of their choice, while one third, or 32%, believe their public bathroom use should be based exclusively on biological sex.
Results are based on an online study conducted from May 30 to June 2 among a sample of 1,001 adults.
