Two Squamish men are taking it upon themselves to pose as 14 year old girls online in an attempt to catch child predators and shame them on social media.
36 year old Elroy Wilson says he’s with the group “Creep Catchers” which has chapters across the country.
“They send you everything, it’s disgusting the things that some of these guys say to a supposed 14 year old girl.”
He’s posted a video on his Facebook page outing a Delta man who allegedly offered a 14 year old girl a ride to Whistler, only to find out Wilson was behind the messages.
“We’ve grown up in this town and you see stories about it constantly right. If we can make a little bit of a difference even 10% difference out of a 100% that happens that’s huge right. This is our town we don’t want to see this happening to kids, I have kids, I don’t want to see it happening to them.”
But Squamish RCMP Sgt. Jolaine Percival says the vigilantism can be dangerous and even hinder ongoing investigations.
“The RCMP does not condone the vigilantism and would recommend the people leave the investigations to the police.”
“This work should be left for the police officers to do in a very controlled environment, that way we can gather evidence that would be able to support a charge.”
Wilson says he’s willing to hand over the video evidence to police, but doubts it would lead to a conviction.
