Hunter Tootoo, Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard and MP for Nunavut is stepping aside over addiction issues.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau released a statement late today writing that Tootoo was leaving his post “effective immediately.”
The statement goes on to say Tootoo will also be leaving the Liberal Caucus.
“Mr. Tootoo will be taking time to seek treatment for addiction issues.”
House leader Dominic Leblanc will assume Tootoo’s portfolio.
Tootoo has released a statement saying he resigned in order to avoid distracting from the government’s work, and asking for privacy as he undergoes treatment.
Tootoo was the first fisheries minister to hail from Northern Canada. Before federal politics, he served as a member of Nunavut’s legislative assembly.
