You may remember a story we brought you back in April about a five-year-old boy needing ear surgery in the Fraser Health Region.
He’s still waiting for the operation and in fact, doesn’t even have a date for the surgery.
New Westminster NDP MLA Judy Darcy says the boy has been waiting nine months and needs the surgery before September when he starts school.
She says dozens of other children face the same situation.
“These parents are really agonizing about this because they want what we all want for our kids which is the very best and every child should have the opportunity to learn and to succeed in school they’re on the brink of starting their education, they’re starting kindergarten and they can’t hear well enough that’s going to create huge challenges for them.”
“It’s simply wrong, we can do better, they need to open up more operating room time so these kids get the surgery they need, so they can hear and succeed in school.”
“Soonest Surgery” tool
Fraser Health’s Tasleem Juma says parents can shop around to find a surgeon with the lowest wait times.
“Doctors will refer to particular surgeons, but parents are able to look at tools – Fraser Health also has a ‘Soonest Surgery’ tool which will also provide a higher level of information in terms of wait times for particular surgeons.”
Juma says there are 13 surgeons in Fraser Health who perform ear surgeries and she says most of them have wait times around six weeks.
Earlier the Health Ministry told us patients and families who are concerned about their care can go to their health authority “Patient Care Quality Office.”
