After a confusing funding announcement last week, the Minister responsible for Translink is sticking to his guns about the province’s share of paying for transit upgrades in Metro Vancouver.
Peter Fassbender is promising $246-million over three years for better bus and SeaBus service, more SkyTrain cars, and the initial work towards major rapid transit in Vancouver and Surrey, but he claims the province never committed to fund 1/3 of the mayors’ entire 10 year transit plan.
“We committed to one third for Broadway, South of the Fraser, Pattullo – depending on how that was going to be scoped out. But we never committed to one third of everything.”
The feds are promising $370-million to fund Metro Vancouver projects, but only if the province and mayors come up with a plan to fund the other half.
