An out-of-this-world discovery, and UBC says it happened right here in Vancouver.
Michelle Kunimoto, an astronomy student from UBC, managed to find four “planet candidates” beyond our solar system.
They’re given the “candidate” designation until they are independently confirmed.
Kunimoto made the extraterrestrial discovery after combing through data from NASA’s Kepler satellite, trying to find anything other scientists may have missed.
The findings have been submitted to the Astronomical Journal.
Kunimoto graduates today from UBC with a Bachelors in Physics and Astronomy.
She’ll be back at UBC trying to find more planets as a Master’s student in the same fields this September.
