Surrey’s booming population is putting pressure on everything, including electricity.
That’s why B.C. Hydro says it built a new $94-million substation in Fleetwood.
Deputy CEO of the Crown corporation, Chris O’Riley, says demand has increased almost 30% over the past 10 years.
“This site has a capacity of 200mva – as we call it, or mega volt ampere, and it can be expandable to about 400mva, so it can be doubled in capacity. For comparison a new condo tower is 2-3mva.”
O’Riley says there are two transformers on site in case one fails if Mother Nature strikes.
Surrey was one of the worst hit areas in last summer’s massive windstorm that saw thousands of people without power for several hours, some even days.
