It’s official. B.C.’s honey bees now have their own day.
Minister of Agriculture Norm Letnick today declared May 29th the official day for the busy bees.
He says the day serves as a reminder of the major role bees play in the province’s agricultural system.
“We want to, as the Ministry and as the government, continue to grow the security of our own food supply, and to do that we have to continue pollination.”
He says people may not be aware how crucial pollination is to the province’s multi-million dollar agriculture sector.
“We have about $470 million dollars’ worth of our Agrifoods that rely on pollination, whether it’s open crops or in green houses.”
Letnick says people can help by planting flowers that blossom at different times of the year, not just summer.
He says the next step is to try to put some hives on B.C. government buildings around Metro Vancouver to help the process.
