Joyce Area residents have launched a new campaign in their fight against proposed high-rises in the area.
“Paint the Town Purple” aims to make the struggle of residents visible by filling their lawns with signs that oppose the proposed development.
Arielle de la Cruz Yip with the Joyce Area Residents Association says many are concerned about affordability and business owners are afraid of going bankrupt.
“These immigrant-owned businesses have been here, some of them 10 years, 15 years or even longer. There’s no real consideration of protecting those small businesses and that is a big concern for us as well. Because those multi-ethnic businesses serve our community.”
The East Vancouver locals have been fighting the plan since November.
The City will be holding a public hearing next month where Arielle says they’ll be finally able to express their concerns.
