“There is no way to buy your way out of this.”
Those heartbreaking words from Downie’s doctor, at a Tuesday morning news conference.
In a post on their website, Canadian rock band the Tragically Hip revealed today that lead singer Gord Downie has terminal brain cancer.
Band members say Downie received the diagnosis a few months ago in December, and has since then “endured a lot of difficult times, and he has been fighting hard,” while he deals with the diagnosis in private alongside his family.
Downie’s doctor, Dr. James Perry, revealed that the singer learned he had the ailment after suffering a seizure.
Though the majority of it can be removed, Perry says the cancer would probably come back.
Summer tour “for Gord”
“‘We want to blow people’s minds”
Speaking at a press conference earlier today, the band’s managers Bernie Breen and Patrick Sambrook said that while the will was there from the beginning, they couldn’t confirm a tour until Downie had the thumbs up from his doctor.
The band also confirmed on their website it’s the best thing for both the band, and for Downie.
“So after 30-some years together as The Tragically Hip, thousands of shows, and hundreds of tours…
We’ve decided to do another one.
This feels like the right thing to do now, for Gord, and for all of us.”
Details and tour dates will be released later this week.
