For parents in New Westminster wondering when they will get a new school to replace the archaic New Westminster Secondary School, the education minister says its coming.
“Well my hope is to continue working with the school district and to be able to give some certainty to the community before the end of the school year.”
Mike Bernier says New Westminster will get a new high school but the process has been more difficult than anticipated.
“We are really close to finalizing an announcement for New Westminster as well. We recognize it is a top priority not only for the area but for us. It has been quite a complicated project and it has taken a lot longer than everybody would like and in fact even ourselves that is why we are working diligently with the school district to get really close to an announcement in the near future.”
Bernier says the complications from First Nations and Chinese remains that are on the land the school is built on.
“It is situated on sites that have a heritage aspects to it. So we have to be very sensitive to that. We want to make sure we are working collaboratively with all of the different partner groups in the province whether it is First Nations or the Chinese community because of that. Space is limited in New Westminster so when we look at building a school we have to be able to accommodate within the space that we have.”
