A Burnaby sports club says its facing an uncertain future due to rental-rate increases for school district athletic facilities.
Coach of the Burnaby Striders Track and Field Club, Winston Reckford, says its looking at all options to keep the club open after rates more than tripled to use the Burnaby South Secondary facilities.
“Why this increase? Nothing has changed, its 200m track, 3 lanes, and we use weight room just for the high school kids for half an hour.”
Burnaby School District Secretary Treasurer, Greg Frank, says the rent is increasing from $440 dollars to more than $1800 dollars for the season to bring the club in line with the community rate across the district.
“There was a historical arrangement which the school had made with them from years gone past and we’ve moved to a centralized system to make sure we have equity across the system.”
Frank says a nominal membership fee increase so the club can make the rent wouldn’t be too burdensome on parents.
