With so many in western Canada pushed out of their homes due to wildfires, one insurance expert says its a reminder having insurance makes it easier to pick up the pieces when disaster strikes.
Aaron Sutherland is the spokesperson for the Insurance Brokers of Canada and says many renters don’t realize the value of what they own.
“Tenants are less inclined to purchase insurance often because they don’t feel they have enough belongings worth ensuring. When the actual fact is when they do take the time to tally up all their belongings they find they have a lot more than they thought,” he says.
Sutherland recommends taking photos and making a list of your belongings then shopping around to different brokerages for the best deal.
Statistics from the City of Vancouver say over half of residents are renters.
Sutherland says renter’s insurance is often more affordable than people realize.
