Her generosity saved his life, but they hadn’t met until this week.
Just months after Dr. Steven Lerigakis from Surrey was diagnosed with lymphoma in 2011, he received a stem cell transplant.
Without it, Canadian Blood Services says, he would not have survived.
And for that he has Katie Karker to thank.
The two were matched through the Blood Services’s OneMatch Stem Cell and Marrow Network, and Dr. Steven says it was an emotional experience meeting Katie for the first time.
“We had a sort of rendezvous arranged for 10 o’clock in the morning, and I arrived at the hotel a little bit early to get get oriented and I didn’t want to see her before the 10 o’clock meeting, I wanted it to be a surprise…And so it was pretty special to see her walking across the carpet and to be able to go up and to hug her.”
Katie, who’s from Michigan, says she was on the database for 12 years before her match was found.
