BC’s Education Minister is all but making it final: there’ll be no extra cash for the Vancouver School Board budget.
The VSB is facing the possible closure of twelve schools and laying off over one hundred and eighty positions.
But Education Minister Mike Bernier says they are doing what they need to, in order to meet their obligations to balance the budget.
“That means making some changes; that mean’s making some cuts, that means making some tough decisions. But decisions that really haven’t been made for a long time in Vancouver and it’s put them in a position where they need to now look at that.”
“Are there tough decisions they need to make this year? Absolutely. There was a report that came out last year that showed there was $37-million dollars worth of opportunities of savings in Vancouver where money could be actually going into classrooms, into programs, helping students. So the school district right now, and the staff at the school district in Vancouver, I’d say, are doing what they need to do.”
Barring a change of heart from the government, the layoffs will take affect June 30th.
