A 17 year old Maple Ridge youth has been charged with dangerous driving causing the death of his passenger last Mother’s Day.
Her father is demanding further upgrades of the deadly stretch of the Haney Bypass where his daughter was killed.
Jeff Struchtrup, started a petition shortly after calling on the provincial government to upgrade the stretch of road after a string of fatal accidents.
“The road widened at least a couple more lanes. Even a pressure sensor light put in so that people can safely turn left off of the Haney Bypass on to Callaghan Avenue. Whatever they can do. We all know how many people have died along the bypass and all I want is for other people not to suffer the way we have.”
Strutchup’s petition, calling for changes to “Katie’s Corner” warns the area is becoming both busier, and more dangerous.
He says the charge a year after his daughter’s death brings some closure, but he says the squeaky wheels of justice means its still a long road ahead.
“There’s been small steps of progress, cones installed along the bypass leading up to Callaghan Avenue.”
The crash happened just after noon on May 10th of last year, when the young man’s Volkswagen collided with a Toyota SUV on the notorious stretch of road.
Kirkland was killed, and the driver along with two people in the Toyota were hurt.
The accused, who was 16 at the time of the crash, has been summoned to attend youth court to answer to the charges.
