A new study out of Simon Fraser University says there is nothing racist about blaming foreign buyers from China for the Vancouver housing crisis.
Assistant Professor Josh Gordon at SFU’s School of Public Policy wants all levels of government to admit foreign buyers are behind B.C.’s housing woes.
Gordon puts a lot of the blame for the housing crisis on foreign buyers, mainly from China, saying that’s simply where the evidence points to.
Gordon says the problem is that the money is foreign, not that it is Chinese money.
He joins a prominent group of local academics in their call for a property surtax on foreign buyers.
A panel of professors and reporters are meeting publicly later this week to discuss how foreign buyers looking for safe havens for their cash are inflating the Vancouver market.
The meeting takes place on Thursday, at 12:30pm at the Harbour Centre, 515 Hastings St.
SFU Professor Rhys Kesselman, UBC Sauder Professor Tom Davidoff and Globe and Mail Reporter Kathy Tomlinson are among the speakers.
