A war of words is escalating between the Speaker of the House and BC’s Children’s watchdog.
Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond in writing is demanding Speaker, and BC Liberals MLA, Linda Reid retract her accusation the Children’s Watchdog was in contempt of Parliament.
The accusation came when Reid blasted Turpel-Lafond earlier this week for posting a report on her office’s web site before tabling it in the legislature.
Initially Turpel-Lafond accused Reid of leaking her report to the Ministry of Children and Family Development but today took it to another level saying the Speaker has no authority to find anyone in contempt.
Turpel-Lafond reminds Reid she is in fact not just an Officer of the Legislature but also a judge who is on leave.
Turpel-Lafond says she finds Reid’s accusations deeply disturbing although she does offer to meet with her to iron out their differences.
She also insists her office has in no way done anything outside its jurisdiction to do.
