An NDP MLA wants an investigation over how a report clearing the Premier of any conflict of interest over party fundraising was leaked to someone in her own office before it was ever released.
Dave Eby has written Speaker, and BC Liberal MLA, Linda Reid after being assured by the Conflict Commissioner he gave her office the only paper copies.
“It is a difficult situation because I have to ask the Speaker essentially investigate herself and her staff about the processes they follow when they recieve a report o fthis nature before it is tabled in the legislature. We will see what she comes up with. I am not sure that there has actually been a precedent investigation so it is hard to know what is going to happen.”
Eby says he is also puzzled after adding another 40 pages to his complaint the afternoon before the Commissioner suddenly submitted it.
“I have been in touch with the Commissioner’s office and he assures me that he sent paper copies directly to the Speaker’s office and to nobody else. The Speaker says she is concerned about the leak and she is going to be investigating it as well. I will wait to see what the Speaker comes up with before pointing any fingers.”
Reporters were given a heads up from the Premier’s office when the report would land and with hints at what it contained.
“I am very concerned that reports going into the Speaker’s office appear to be ending up in the hands of the BC Liberals.”
Eby says it is a difficult situation asking the Speaker, also a BC Liberal MLA, to essentially investigate her own office for a leak.
The final report cleared Premier Christy Clark of any conflict of interest over party fundraising activity.
It is turning into a convoluted case of who knew what and when.
Sources within the Premier’s office say they had no idea when the Conflict of Interest Commissioner would table his report and it was reporters who first told them when the report was coming and not the other way around.
