B.C. Education Minister Mike Bernier is disappointed in those Vancouver School Board trustees who voted against a balanced budget that comes with $24 million in cuts.
For others, a pat on the back:
“I want to thank those trustees who understood the importance of trying to pass a balanced budget. I am also disappointed that the board is putting partisan politics ahead of the needs of students.”
Looks like the Vancouver School Board will need to get cracking if it plans to hand in a balanced budget by June 30th.
The board failed to pass a budget with deep cuts last night.
If cuts are to be made, the union contract stipulates notification be given in May.
Bernier says the Board has to respect that.
“The fact that they have collective agreements that they have to work around; they need to respect that. But that’s not something that is within my realm or my jurisdiction, because those decisions are made at the local level.”
Bernier says he wants to meet with the board chair and look for solutions.
