With Friday’s play-by-the-rules-or-close-your-doors deadline looming for Vancouver pot shops, one City Councillor says the problem was allowed to spiral out of control.
Melissa De Genova says the City allowed the pot shops to spring up all over the place over the years, and did nothing about it.
“I think that had the City looked to other municipalities, like Abbotsford and Surrey, and shut down these medical marijuana dispensaries, one by one – we would certainly have been in a better place. If you look at those municipalities, they aren’t having those issues, because they did take action as they’ve started popping up.”
She says we are now in a position where city and police resources are stretched, and Federal legalization could trump local rules.
“Right now, we are certainly in limbo in this city. By the time some of these shops are shut down, we may see that the Federal Government has come forward with a system of regulation and legalization that would allow some to stay open, or some that we have vetted in the city to close.”
She questions if police even have the resources to close the pot shops who defy the rules.
