The Public Health Agency of Canada, along with Ontario’s Ministry of Health is confirming the first positive case of Zika virus transmitted sexually in Canada.
The person involved is from Ontario, and is suspected to have contracted the virus from someone diagnosed with Zika after travelling to an affected country.
In a joint statement, both agencies are reminding Canadians that the risk of contracting Zika is very low, and that mosquitoes generally transmit the disease.
A number of people in B.C. are being monitored after travelling to affected areas, though health officials have reiterated they don’t pose any risk to the public.
In total, there have been 55 travel-related cases of the Zika virus in Canada.
