With talk of when ride-sharing companies like Uber will enter the B.C. market, it seems some south of the Fraser also want in.
Surrey Board of Trade CEO Anita Huberman says over 100 cities already have Uber.
Huberman says she’s met with Peter Fassbender, the minister tasked with finding a solution.
“The taxi companies were in the room, Uber was in the room. It was a lively dialogue as you can imagine with all the business members. I know Peter is looking at it from all angles.”
Huberman adds there needs to be a level playing field between taxi companies and ridesharing companies.
“Companies must obtain a provincial license and pay fees. They must have a valid driver’s license. The province needs to look at if a driver has a criminal background…ICBC will have a role to play in this as well.”
Although the Board of Trade is in full support of bringing in Uber, Huberman says she doesn’t expect a decision until next year’s provincial election.
