If you’ve been listening to the Lynda Steele Show in the past few months, you know the team is a little wine obsessed.
So John Skinner has our dream job, as the founder and Wine Proprietor at Painted Rock Winery.
Skinner, a long time stock broker, says he was looking for an exit strategy when he entered the wine business.
“I saw an opportunity to build something that was a legacy family business…and I thought there was a great opportunity to make a difference.”
He says the process to get the land and grow the grapes was a long one.
“The more I looked, the more I learned – there are no two properties alike, and most of what was for sale was for sale for a reason. So when I found the property we ended up planting, it had been fallow for seventeen years. So I had to re-imagine the entire business plan and start right from scratch.”
It took six years to get from the concept of owning a winery, to the business actually starting up…but Skinner says at the end of the day, the job is extremely satisfying.
“I would tell anybody; the BC wine industry is only at this very moment getting on the world stage. We’re being recognized for really high quality…we’re really getting on the international stage.”
