In the wake of Surrey’s 33rd recorded shooting of the year, around one hundred people gathered at the Bell Performing Arts Centre for an RCMP-hosted community meeting on youth, drugs and violence.
Concerned, parents, grandparents, students and other community members say the rash of gunfire in their community has them fearful and afraid an innocent bystander could get caught in the crossfire.
“You never know how is going to shoot outside when you go out to shop, and they even start shooting in the day time.”
“As a parent I am really concerned about what is happening on the streets.”
“There was a shooting 2-3 streets down from our place, that scares us, our kids go to the school in the areas, and the school was locked down for half an hour, that was the scariest time for us.”
A mother desperate to help her nineteen-year-old son escape a life of drugs and violence also spoke to CKNW.
“I cry every night, I cry day, I cry night, I cry all of the time.”
The Surrey mother who asked not to be identified says she’s fearful she will end up burying her child.
“That’s what I don’t want to see. I rather bury my own self before him.”
She says she’s done everything including calling the police herself on a drug deal she witnessed, but feels helpless.
“I told them he is selling drugs, but they said they can’t do anything unless he is caught red handed.”
She says she came her looking for answers.
Representatives from the Surrey School District, Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit and the City of Surrey are also in attendance.

Meanwhile, Surrey RCMP say the latest recorded shooting was targeted, although the family inside wasn’t the intended victims.
Cpl. Scotty Schumann says bullets were fired into a home on 93rd Avenue near 16oth around 10:30pm on Saturday.
“It certainly appears that the house was targeted and that wasn’t done randomly, however we do not know what the motive is.”
He says the family inside is unknown police and don’t appear to be the intended victims…
“Certainly though this shooting does have some of the earmarks of a targeted offence in that all of the bullets are in one particular place.”
A light coloured SUV was seen fleeing the scene.
No one was hurt.
