The Vancouver Park Board plans to shut down the popular Vancouver Aquatic Centre next week during the 4/20 marijuana smoke-up at Sunset Beach.
Chair Sarah Kirby-Yung says staff determined the ventilation system would suck up too much pot smoke.
“Too much smoke entering the Aquatic Centre was one of the concerns. Additional considerations, we have a lot of seniors and other folks have respiratory sensitivities to we have to be aware of that.”
“And also we don’t want to get in a situation where we are trying to manage crowds of event attendees that are flooding into the Aquatic Centre as well. So there are a number of reasons and we just deemed it was safer for all concerned to close it for the day.”
Kirby-Yung reiterates commissioners are not sanctioning the event and urged months ago the organizers consider another location.
Smoking is not allowed at city parks or beaches.
