“Year over year the cost of collecting these MSP taxes has jumped 30%.”
The Canadian Taxpayers Federation has found the amount of taxpayer money used to collect those much maligned MSP payments is going up and up.
B.C. Director Jordan Bateman says documents obtained by a Freedom of Information request show last year, the province spent $77 million to collect MSP.
Over a three year period, the bill is $189-million.
“It is a big chunk of money for the provincial government being spent on collecting this tax, especially when you already have this parallel tax system running to it. Income tax exists. It is cost shared with the Federal Government. We have this other tax system we could add this too virtually for free, but instead, we decided to have this parallel system.”
Bateman says more than 850,000 MSP payments are at least 31 days past due, and $340-million in bad MSP debt had been written off over six years.
