For many, it is the ultimate dream to spend their days surrounded by caffeine, but for Laura Perry…that’s actually her job.
Perry is the “Green Coffee Buyer” for 49th Parallel Coffee Roasters. She joined Lynda Steele in studio as part of the Putting BC To Work 2016, Dream Jobs series.
Perry says she actually started her coffee career as a Barista.
“I’m fortunate to get access to information, that led me to know that this job existed, and to then ask the question ‘How do I get qualified for it?'”
She describes her job as “half spreadsheets and half traveling, tasting and evaluating coffee.”
“I spend about five months out of the year – depending on when coffee is in season and harvested – in East Africa, and then Central America, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador…and then finally South America.”
She says the specialty coffee industry is continuously growing and changing.
“We’re still trying to understand, how can we be more sustainable…how can we know we’re paying an appropriate price, how can we know how this farmer is treating the soil so that we can make sure there’s no soil erosion.”
