A little more than 100 of the Lower Mainland’s police officers have officially joined Alexa’s Team this morning.
They’re being recognized for doing their part to get drunk drivers off the road.
Alexa Middelaer was killed by a drunk driver in 2008 – just four years old.
Her mother, Laurel, says eight years after her death, Canadians are finally starting to see the drunk driver as a social pariah.
“And I think we’re getting to that point, where people say ‘this just doesn’t make sense.’ It’s totally avoidable, and people are too educated. We have such an educated population. We don’t need to be reckless when we drive.”
According to data provided by Alexa’s Team, an average of 78 Canadians are killed every year by impaired drivers.
