Burnaby fire crews are on the scene of a 2-alarm blaze in the old golf driving range at Hastings and Kensignton, right beside one of the refineries.
The incident is believed to be a case of arson.
A homeless man called the fire in, saying he saw several people running from the scene.
The biggest disruption seems to be to the traffic on Hastings, although local businesses are still operating, including a Petro-Canada station just across the street.
Wendy Garcia-Reyes lives nearby, and she called CKNW shortly after 4:15 this morning.
“Actually I heard it from my house. I thought I heard gunshots and I thought, “Oh oh, what’s going on?” And then also I heard sirens so I looked out on the balcony and I seen a big puff of smoke come up and big orange everywhere, orange fire, you could see huge, giant flames and a big black cloud of smoke. So then I got in my truck to take a ride to see what was on fire because I was thinking it was the Shell gas station because it’s down that way, so I went right down there and I parked in the parking lot right across the street. But it wasn’t the gas station, it’s in behind it. It’s where the driving range was and there’s like fire trucks and police have the road all blocked off now and there’s big huge giant flames, just like huge flames coming out of there.”
So far, no injuries reported.
