A professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at North Carolina State University, Afsaneh Rabiei, has developed a composite metal foam that is not only extremely light but can also stop an armor piercing bullet so effectively that the bullet explodes on impact.
That is crazy!
Her research also finds that the composite metal foam also handles heat and fire twice as well as plain metals.
You might be asking yourself why you need to know about this…
#1. It is super cool.
#2. This technology could work for more than just more effective armor for soldiers, it could be used for airplane and space travel because of the way it protects against heat, it could be used for protection in situations involving radiation, and this is just the beginning.
Any time we can use existing resources and technology and advance them to be more effective, efficient, and useful, well that is the best use of research and science.
