Summer is coming, the sun is out, the bees are buzzing, and people are lining up to get their gelato fix.
Who’s the best person to be in that 10 minute line for a tasty treat? Probably the Gelato Maestro himself.
Today, as part of our Dream Jobs series, Lynda Steele spoke to James Coleridge, the Gelato Maestro at Bella Gelateria, who describes himself as a “Willy Wonka” of the Gelato world.
“I’m a byproduct of the city in many ways. The city and our fans encouraged that zaniness, and I just take it on a world tour and happen to win a bunch of awards.”
The last award Coleridge won was Gelato Maester of the world, and says his passion for gelato was actually a byproduct of growing up eating “cheap ice cream.”
“As we age, and become more aware of things, we move away from that fatty ice cream that’s filled with air. And I think Vancouver and all of us…we demand a little more in our city. So for me, when we take passion, innovation and intelligence, you put that together…it spells boom.”
Coleridge’s says he gets inspiration for most of his gelato from the city.
“You get inspired when you walk through a Farmer’s Market, and you talk to a farmer who has dedicated their life to make the best berries or the best fruit. And you taste it and you go ‘Wow, that’s ridiculous…I want to make a gelato out of it!’ So it’s pretty inspirational.”
Part of Coleridge’s success is to try new things, such as his new water-buffalo-milk gelato!
