The first major development directly integrated with the Canada Line has officially opened.
“Marine Gateway”, formerly a one-block site with no housing at Cambie and Marine, is now a transit-oriented urban town centre with four towers and shopping.
Mayor Gregor Robertson says he’d like to see similar development along other transit lines.
“We want to see further development along the Expo and Millennium Lines we are certainly seeing that start to happen in a big way in Burnaby and Surrey.”
The Marine Gateway project sold out in days with most of the units purchased by people under the age of 40.
Robertson says it’s a good start to creating more rental space.
“the vacancy is the real crunch for Vancouver right now there’s basically no vacancy of rental housing and getting more rental housing at various levels of affordability is what’s really important right now.”
The development is comprised of 461 market condos and rental apartments.
Retailers on site will create about 650 jobs.
