No charges have been laid following the death of 32-year-old Constable Sarah Beckett, the officer killed while on duty this morning in Langford.
Assistant BC RCMP Commissioner Sharon Woodburn says it’s a tragic incident but she wouldn’t elaborate on anything regarding possible charges.
“We have an investigation into the traffic accident, Saanich police is helping us with that, and we also have a criminal investigation, those are the next steps”
One is too many
It’s not something that happens too often, but Mounties say one on duty death is too many.
Beckett, an 11-year member of the Mounties, is the 8th officer to be killed while on duty on Vancouver Island.
Island District Commander Chief Superintendent Ray Bernoties fought back tears announcing Beckett’s death this morning.
Beckett was on general duty early this morning, when her cruiser was t-boned by a pick-up truck at a major intersection in Langford.
Bernoties says the driver of that truck was treated for minor injuries, but is in police custody.
“There’s a criminal investigation under way being led by the R.C.M.P.’s general investigation section.”
Beckett leaves behind a husband and two young children, along with a mother and sister.
She had recently returned to work after maternity leave.
Bernoties says Beckett was a very popular member of the R.C.M.P.
“She has an enormous circle of friends and close friends and family.”
Condolences pouring in
A GoFundMe account to help support her grieving family has been set up, and within eight hours had already surpassed $25,000.
And officials, fellow police officers and the public are sharing their messages of condolence to Beckett’s family.
Federal public safety minister Ralph Goodale issued a statement saying “the death of a police officer is a stark reminder of the sacrifices and bravery of our police women and men who put themselves in harm’s way each and every day,” while Premier Christy Clark says she hopes they will take comfort knowing their mom was a hero.
Many flags around BC are now at half mast.
