As CKNW launches Putting BC To Work 2016, The Lynda Steele Show is launching a mini-series focused on Dream Jobs!
Each week throughout Putting BC To Work, we will talk to three Vancouverites about their “dream career,” and why their job is the best.
On Monday, to get the series started we thought we’d look into a very Vancouver career – Aquabus Driver!
Dillon Law has worked for the company for 4 years, and says he loves how social his job is.
“I find that there’s a certain shyness with people when you try to speak to them in public. When they get on an Aquabus that all changes. It’s something about the novelty of the boats that kind of just opens up the option for dialogue…You never know who you’re going to meet on the boats.”
Law says he has shuttled around a few celebrities, including Zoe Saldana and Matt Damon.
“He was incognito so I didn’t even realize it until he got off! Someone came along and said, ‘Dillon do you realize who you just had on your boat?’ And I said, ‘No who did I have?’ And they said, ‘MATT DAMON.'”
He says he’s also met tourists from all over the world who come to visit the city, and experience an Aquabus ride.
It’s not all fun and games though, Law says you do need to be certified before getting behind the wheel.
“You need your certifications first from Transport Canada…there’s about three other licenses involved too. But with my prior knowledge and those licenses, it took about 5-7 days of training. I only banged the boat against the dock a couple of times!”
Law says the most challenging part of the job is docking the boats, especially with Vancouver’s tricky weather.
The best part is, if you’re someone who enjoys the open water, working outside and the wind in your hair…Aquabus is hiring!
And it looks like the Lynda Steele Team aren’t the only ones who are interested in driving an Aquabus…as part of Never Have I Ever, the Jon McComb team tried their hand at commandeering an Aquabus:
