With dozens of shootings in Surrey so far this year, Mayor Linda Hepner says she understands why residents are angry.
Speaking to CKNW’s Simi Sara, Hepner says she feels the same way.
“I’m absolutely sitting here furious.”
But Hepner says work has been done.
The biggest change is resources, including 100 new officers.
“We’ve got most of those officers now here. I think we’re short five or so, but those are on their way.”
Hepner adds, there were 825 arrests last year connected to the shootings.
“300 charges, over 137 weapons, 33 firearms. So, while all of that group of individuals was taken off the street, we’ve created a vacuum. So what we are seeing now is this new group of individuals trying to fill that void.”
RCMP Superintendent Shawn Gill says the violence is disturbing, but the public isn’t at risk.
Gill says criminals are hurting other criminals.
He adds it’s harder to get a handle on the situation, with a population that continues to grow each year.
