The Real estate market in Vancouver is hot, and it seems like everybody involved makes money hand over fist.
You can barely sell a house at asking price these days. Everything is going for over asking price.
So it only makes sense that real estate is the kind of career that people want to get in to. But what does it take to be a realtor?
To find out we sent CKNW’s Tim Dickert down to the Real Estate Council of B.C. to find out how to become a realtor.
He spoke with RECBC Education Licensing Officer, Caroline Allen.

First step: Take the Real Estate Trading Service Course
“The council requires, to become a licensee, a course called the Real Estate Trading Service Course that’s through the real estate division at UBC. After an individual has completed that, they would go on and take an applied practice course through the British Columbia Real Estate Association. The licensing course itself, once you register for the course, a pack of materials will come to you and all the materials are available online. There is a course resources web page that provides all the materials on the website, as well there are lectures that the real estate provision provides. They are usually offered on one week and one month basis and those are delivered before an exam. There are also exam preparation lectures and videos on the website that provide students who can’t attend in-class lectures the opportunity to see the information explained by an instructor.”
Learning the ropes
“What I tell people about the licensing course, is that it teaches you the rules and regulations in which your practice is bound. So it will teach you about the real estate services that contract law information about mortgage finance and other parts about how the payments all work, at the end of the day, once the property is paid for, that sort of thing. As well as appraisals, you learn about local law and contract law, agency law as well as there is information on property building construction and design and technology use in the transaction.”
What it takes to be a great realter
“Some people are just people-people, others are more detail orientated, maybe they’ve been involved in finance, or you get people form marketing and teacher. It’s all different kinds and there is no one magic type of person that is good at real estate.
I think that really the thing is that as a client you want to find someone who will be your agent who you can trust and so I think that’s the biggest thing for people going into industry, that they need to be trustworthy and I think that that’s big because really, when people are making one of the perhaps biggest purchases of their lives, they really want to find someone who can help them follow that purchase through and advise them and make sure that they’re doing everything properly.
That’s why we have the courses and the requirements that we do in place, to make sure that those licensees have those skills and abilities.”
