“It’s time” says Vancouver Councillor Melissa De Genova about the delay to recognize a part of Commercial Drive as “Little Italy.”
It’s been almost a year since De Genova first put a motion to recognize the area’s Italian cultural heritage.
The motion was amended to be part of the wider Grandview-Woodlands consultation which she says has slowed the process.
“We’ve moved forward to celebrate other cultural communities in Vancouver such as Chinatown and Little Saigon, near Kingsway.”
The area would be four blocks of Commercial Drive north and south of 1st Avenue.
She says the community has been supportive from day one.
“People that I’ve spoken to in the Italian community are very excited to see Little Italy the official designation ready in time for Italian Day.”
Italian day will be on June 12 this summer.
