A parent is speaking out about her concerns with the $27 million dollar budget deficit the Vancouver School Board is facing.
Mabel Sun, who is part of the Board’s Parent’s Advisory Council says the students and the parents are the ones who suffer the consequences.
“I continue to see this trend of the funding being cut and the program being cut and staff being laid off, of course that’s just not a good thing for a parent to see that.”
Some of the recommendations from the Board trying to balance the budget include chopping the band and strings programs, charging employee parking and job cuts of more than 200 people.
She says even though she values the education system, she continues to see program cuts.
“Basically in the end is the parent and the student who suffer the consequences, so we are the biggest sacrifice.”
Sun says the needs of the students are not being met and this deficit will not help the situation.
